Implement into the Daily Routine
Once the TokenEconomy is ready to use, share the responsibility list with your child. When you explain that rewards are made available if they do a good job, they will be eager to work toward the behavior goals that you have set. Over the course of a typical day, a parent can check off responsibilities that the child had performed. Depending on your situation, you may find it easier to enter these toward the end of the night. TokenEconomy keeps track of the number of tokens (points) that have been earned for that day. Earned tokens are made available to them to redeem a reward. This helps them understand the concept that they need to follow routines and behave appropriately in order to earn rewards.
Positive and Negative Behaviors
TokenEconomy has the capability to mark positive and negative behaviors for a particular day. While it is important to acknowledge the good, children must know that poor behavior has negative consequences. TokenEconomy recommends that a category of negative behaviors (where tokens are deducted) be used. In addition, you can attach a "note" to each responsibility that you can refer back to at a later date. We have found this feature to be helpful to parents trying to figure out patterns of behavior.
Reward the Positive
As a parent, you set the rewards with a token (point) value. So, as the child accumulates tokens for their good behavior and positive actions, they can "shop" for these rewards. Children will certainly feel a sense of accomplishment when a reward certificate arrives. Ultimately, it will be understood that good things come to those who work hard toward their goals.
Since you determine what constitutes a reward, they can be based on what you feel is appropriate for your family. For example, a reward can range from a trip to the ice cream store, an allowance (cash), or a larger value item like a video game. The choice is yours.
We understand that parents are very busy and may forget to enter their child's earned tokens for the day. If you so chose, you can have TokenEconomy email you a reminder at a time you prefer. You can also go back a day (or more) and enter their tokens in case you forgot. That way, your child will not be penalized for your oversight.
